merry christmas!

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas!

By the way, this beautiful tree is not ours. It belongs to our friend Renee who decorated it with the cutest yarn balls and word tags.

a seriously cool christmas card

We got this really cool, hand-drawn Christmas card from one of our friends (and one of Tony's bandmates), Lennie. Wow. Talk about great art! I think we should frame this one ya'll. Thanks, Lennie!

morning walk photos

My walk to work is a pretty nice one because I get to go through part of a Cambridge neighborhood where there are homes with high price tags. I snapped a couple of photos along the way this morning (click on them to see the image at full size). The first one is of a house I walk past nearly every day. I just love the row of icicles going across the edge of the roof.

I walked past this house yesterday and noticed the giganomous wreaths, so I took a photo of them today. Insanely huge, eh?

Here is one of them close up. I think it's cool how they used the citrus fruit instead of more traditional things to decorate the wreath. I wonder where one would get a wreath that big though.

And then the last three photos I would like to post are simply birds. I don't know why but lately I've had this fascination with birds. Like I'll wonder where they go when it snows. I wish I could be a bird so I could fly away to different places around the world. And poop on mean people when necessary. Anyway, it was weird because the first two flew by my head this morning and perched near by, almost as if they wanted me to take their picture. (I know, speaking of birds, my brain's going a bit coo-coo typing this entry.) I don't know what kind of bird the first one is, but the second one is a robin, and the third one is of a white pigeon.

Okay, enough bird talk. Gotta go make some cookies!

harvard yard

I walked through Harvard Yard this afternoon to run some errands during my lunch break and snapped this photo with my cell phone. We got lots and lots of snow, but they do a nice job of clearing the walkways for us. Definitely not as much as many of the suburbs and the Cape got, but still taller than knee high for this little person to walk through.

a very busy saturday

Whew! Saturday was a seriously jam packed day for me. It all kind of started on Friday with preparation for the blizzard that was due to hit our area around 1:00 pm. After the disaster that happened last year where people didn't get released from work until after the snow began to fall, I think a lot of businesses released employees way in advance just in case. So after we got the okay to go home at noon, I sped home to get things ready for Saturday's Design Hive show because it was happening regardless of the snow! I snapped a photo of our car on my walk to work that morning, and then took another one of Tony brushing off the car before we left on Saturday morning.

The Design Hive turned out to be a great success by the end of the day. It was pretty quiet early in the morning - probably when people were at home digging themselves out of the snow - but then it got really busy around 1:30/2:00 when people got stir crazy being cooped up in their homes. A special thank you to my friends that managed to weather the icy cold (it was like 20 degrees outside all day!) to come see me: Luisa, Liz, Lorena, Laura, Chris and Lynn, Teeru, Kate, Stephanie M., and Stefanie!! It was so good to see familiar faces there - I can't thank you all enough!

Here are photos from the show. The first one is (like the one above) of my wonderful husband waking up early with me to take me there; my booth complete with a wrinkled sign and tablecloth; Rebecca's table; Knitz for Kidz's booth with the cute little knit animal hats; Stephanie's table; Andrea's table; one of the young kids that went around selling holiday baked goods and coffee throughout the day; and Joe Fox (Val's husband) buying some cookies from another little boy. The kids were incredibly cute and polite! I wish I didn't have these stupid food allergies so that I could've eaten their yummy looking cookies and homemade empanadas!

And then right after the show we went home, ate a quick dinner, and then drove out to Harvard Square to park the car. Then we hopped on the red line to downtown Boston to meet up with Jim and Marcie to watch the Harry Connick Jr. concert at the Colonial Theatre. It was quite an amazing show!! I like how it wasn't completely just Christmas songs. They did a lot of cool, New Orleans-based songs too. Here's a little bit of the encore they performed:

He is such a talented artist and entertainer. Plus he's so darn handsome. Yum! :) Afterwards, we went around the corner to Rock Bottom for food and drinks before facing the cold weather home.

Needless to say, I slept in today. I love Sundays. :)

the show must go on!

So despite the snowstorm that dumped quite a bit of the white stuff on us today, the Design Hive will definitely still happen tomorrow! I've been super busy creating new card designs for tomorrow - the last day of the event! Here's a peek at some of the new ones:

One design I made consisted of a funny owl stamp that cracks me up each time I look at it. The look on their faces makes me imagine a "did you fart?" conversation for some reason. Can ya see what I mean?

Anyhoo (lol), I'm crossing my fingers that it isn't too bad out there tomorrow and that we get a good turn out at the event. And then, it's off to see Harry Connick Jr. at the Colonial Theatre afterwards!

P.S. The new designs will be posted in my Etsy shop on Sunday!

algiers + brussel sprouts

After a late night out with some friends last night, we slept in today and I found it incredibly difficult to leave the warmth and comfort of our bed to face the icy cold weather outside. Alas, a bunch of errands needed to be done so we headed out despite the below freezing temps.

I went to the post office on Mount Auburn Street in Cambridge and the line was almost out the door. Yikes! Tip for you peeps: use the self service automated machine to mail out your packages. There were two people ahead of me in line but all-in-all, it only took me about ten minutes. Definitely would've been there longer if I stood in that other line!

I met Tony at Burdick's but that line was almost out the door, too, so we opted for another place to get our daily dose of caffeine. I took him over to Algier's where we managed to find a table upstairs. He had a yummy caffe mocha while I enjoyed a latte and a croissant. It's a cute place but it can get quite crowded.

Afterwards, we made a trip to Paper Source so that I could return a couple of things and turn in my submissions for their holiday card contest; to Michael's so I could pick up a birthday present for one of my coworkers; and then to the grocery store to get shrimp for tonight's dinner. While we were at Stop & Shop, we saw these huge stalks of brussel sprouts.

It was funny to me that it would've been cheaper to buy the giganomous stalk that weighted ten pounds rather than the little bundle of them in a container. But we couldn't see how we'd get something like that home, let alone what we would've done with a million brussel sprouts.

I'm going to end this post on that note. Gotta go do our Christmas cards before it's too late.

staff holiday party

We had our Harvard Art Museum's staff holiday party last night at the Queen's Head Pub in the basement of Memorial Hall. The pub and Crimson Catering did an awesome job with the decorations and food setup, and we had a great turnout.

Part of the festitivies this year included a raffle drawing for staff members where they could pick from one of six prizes to win. Elissa and I had a blast putting them together -- they were a hot chocolate set from Burdick's; a holiday cookie baking set from Crate & Barrel; a cute martini set complete with a mini shaker; four AMC Gold movie passes in a popcorn bowl; a beautiful Snow & Graham 2009 calendar; and two tickets to the Bruins vs. Canadiens hockey game in January.

Tony was able to join me and I think he had the most fun at the decorate-your-own-gingerbread station. :)

I went to watch a band that my husband is in,The Buckners, at O'Briens tonight. Here are two videos I captured of them.

the scrapbooker's dream in tewksbury, ma

Renee and I surprised Liz tonight by taking her A Muse card class at the Scrapbooker's Dream in Tewksbury. There were 8 students registered total and it was a lot of fun watching Liz (in her cute apron!) teach various techniques and tricks to everyone. We made a total of five super cute cards and shopped a little too much in the store afterwards.

Laurie, the store owner, is having a 50% off pretty much everything sale until 6 pm this Monday, 12/15. So if you're in that area, stop by and check out the unbelievable deals!

sunday morning + a new project

After hopping around a few blogs this week, I came across one by Shimelle Laine. I found a neat little idea for a new project I want to work on based on a journaling exercise she has posted here. I like the concept of starting [a scrapbook layout] with your journaling first, and then going back to create the rest of it based on collected thoughts. So for this project - I think I'll call it my '28 Days' project - I'm going to follow a particular journaling style similar to this:

Start a new page and number 1 to 9. In each of those spaces, write down something you love. They can range from your spouse to your favourite soup! Once you’ve made the list, go back and add some description to each one. A bonus if you can play with alliteration—adding words that start with the same sound. So you might have ‘sunsets’ on your list, and transform it to ‘shimmering summer sunsets’. Once you’ve added a little something to each word, you’re ready to turn your list
into some fabulous sentences. Just fill in these blanks with the phrases on your list:
I love _____, _____ and _____.
I love _____, _____ and _____.
I love _____, _____ and _____,
but I can’t stand ______________.
Add something you don’t like to the last blank for a punchy element of contrast.

I think I'll skip on the "but I can't stand" line and just focus on things I love. And then after 28 page entries that I'll keep in a journal (God knows I have a ton of things to write in), I'll start pairing things up in sets of three to create a page about them. Sometimes they'll go together and perhaps other times they will not. I imagine I'll collect things like photos (of people, food, things, you name it) and random memorabilia (like clothing tags, receipts, catalog cut outs, the list goes on). And then my goal is to create one page per day in February - that's where the number 28 comes into play. I hope to post them online each day in the style that Ali Edwards posts her projects (possibly create a separate blog for it?), and then explain how the pages were put together (see this), etc.

So anyway. Will you do this project with me? It would be great to see what other people come up with. Leave a comment if you're interested!

I think one of the things I will write on my list starting today is this:

"I love when - instead of continuing to sleep in on a Sunday morning in our comfortable bed with warm blankets and soft, light snow falling outside our window - my husband whispers in my ear: 'will you make me some pancakes?'"

And I already have the photo to go with it:

(I have to admit, I like Sunday morning pancakes, too. Made from scratch I dare add.)

Okay, so that aside, here's a funny for Sunday morning. Today is our friend, Luke's, birthday. Happy birthday, Luke! So I made some brownies for Tony to take to band rehearsal this afternoon and we wanted to make it a little more festive for the occasion. Well, all I could find in our cupboards was this tube of orange icing from who knows when (let's hope the guys eat all the brownies before reading this - it's just sugar - does sugar go bad?!). And it was incredibly difficult to squeeze out of the tube so Tony decided to try it out himself.

[drum roll please]

[I think his knuckles are turning white from squeezing so hard!]

Ta-da! LMAO Not bad ... I think Luke will get the point! :)

viva ortegacy @ grand

I bought a t-shirt from Dave of Viva Ortegacy at the Design Hive last weekend, and he told me about their "Boston Tee Party" at the Grand store in Union Square, so Tony and I decided to check it out. Dave's friends did an awesome job of putting together appetizers and beautiful chocolate truffles for the event (course, the event was about a t-shirt design and here I am ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the food!) ... we were heading to dinner at the Independent so we refrained from trying the yummy-looking skewers, but we pocketed (read: put in my purse) a couple of the earl grey tea infused dark chocolate bars and the jasmine infused truffles. Absolutely delicious and so professional looking!

Oh and yeah, sorry, the whole reason for the post: the t-shirt design! Doh!

The design features six skulls outlined in orange, yellow, and green. I bought one in brown for Tony to wear at one of his gigs. Quite cool. Grand, the store itself, houses some really cool and unique home and gift items. If you're ever in the Union Square area, check it out!
